About this painting

The Christ Child reaches up to His Mother's face, and a whole court stands still for it. The friars on the left go barefoot. Cosimo de' Medici paid for the altarpiece around 1450, for the high altar of the Franciscan convent of San Bonaventura at Bosco ai Frati, and put his own saints in it. Friends of Florence, who sponsored its restoration, name them: at left Saints Anthony of Padua, Louis of Toulouse and Francis; at right Saints Cosmas and Damian, the Medici saints, with Saint Peter Martyr. The classical wall and niche behind Our Lady, they note, reflect what Fra Angelico had seen in Rome.
