A hundred centimetres tall and a hundred and ninety-two wide. Christ is laid out along a landscape the way a body is laid on a tomb slab, and the format is the argument: nothing in this picture rises, everything lies down. Brussels bought the panel from a dealer named Lucq in 1844 and publishes nothing else about it — no essay, no commentary, one line of acquisition. What the museum will not tell you, the shape of the thing says.
