Christ lies across His Mother's lap, and she has fainted under Him. The Alte Pinakothek reads it plainly: the Virgin, overcome, falls sideways into unconsciousness, and Saint John catches her and keeps the body from sliding. One disciple holds up the living and the dead together. From the Cross Christ had given her to John as mother; here the charge is kept. A woman cradles His head, another holds His feet, and behind them the dark burial cave opens in the rock. Sandro Botticelli painted it for the high altar of San Paolino in Florence, for meditation on the Passion. John does not let go.
