The body of Christ lies across the front, cut off by the edge, the side wound running red toward the sheet. Our Lady has nothing to hold, so she holds her own hands together. Everyone presses close; the Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent says these close-up figures fill the whole surface to heighten the drama. The museum names Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus carrying Christ, Saint John comforting His Mother, Mary Magdalene at the top right. A painter in the circle of Hugo van der Goes made this copy of a lost original, one of his most copied works. His dead weight rests on the living.
