About this painting

The Cross stands empty behind them, its title still at the top, INRI. Our Lady holds the dead Christ across her knees and cups His head; Saint John bends in red to take the weight; Mary Magdalene sits apart with her hands together. The Städel gives the painting to a Netherlandish master of about 1475, and its record names his model: Dieric Bouts's Lamentation in the Louvre, 69 by 49 centimetres. This oak measures 70.1 by 50.7, the model's size almost to the centimetre. Behind Golgotha a town goes on with its towers and its river. The body she gave Him lies in her lap again.
