The Christ Child holds three small nails and wears a ring of thorns on His wrist, and looks up at His Mother while she reads. His hand rests on the page beside hers. Luca Frigerio finds legible words there: Isaiah's prophecy of the virgin who conceives, and the psalm verse that opens every hour of the breviary, Roman and Ambrosian. The layout, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli suggests, is a Book of Hours. So Sandro Botticelli lets her read Him the promise of His birth while He already holds His death. The museum allows the nails and crown are perhaps not original, and calls them reminders of the Passion. She keeps reading.
