About this painting
This is not Memling's usual setting for the Virgin. Her throne is erected in the middle of the nave, and the church is cut in two by it: the whole space is made a Tabernacle, which the mystical writers tie to the mystery of the Incarnation.
Saint James the Pilgrim and Saint Dominic stand beside her, presenting a family that is inside the building with them — Jacob Floreins, a Bruges spice merchant, his wife in widow's dress, nineteen children, the younger ones in the aisles. A rood-screen of five bays shuts off the choir; each transept opens onto country.
