Our Lady sits on nothing, held up in a ring of small heads in cloud, with the Christ Child on her knee, and fruit hangs in the trees behind the saints. The museum's record reads her floating, rather than enthroned, as the Assumption, the feast of the church that commissioned Andrea Mantegna's altarpiece. Below her, three angels sing at a small organ, which Elena Bugini reads as a pun on that church's name, Santa Maria in Organo. Saint John the Baptist, Saint Gregory the Great, Saint Benedict and Saint Jerome stand two by two; Jerome holds a small church, and Benedict wears the white of the reformed Olivetan habit the monastery kept. The monks' account books record payments for gold and ultramarine, and gifts of pheasants, partridges and hares. The canvas went up on the high altar on the Feast of the Assumption, 15 August 1497.
