Two fingers lifted, and the dark closes in behind Him on every side. Christ looks straight out; His other hand comes forward and rests on the lower edge, as if He stood behind a window and leaned on the sill. The Norton Simon Museum reads the device that way, and calls Hans Memling's image, fifteen inches high, a blend of icon formality and portrait realism, made to promote private worship and prayer. A Salvator Mundi usually holds a cross-topped globe, as the Met's version from Memling's workshop does; the Web Gallery of Art reads this one as a Salvator Mundi without the attributes of His power. The hand that made the world holds nothing, and blesses whoever stands at the sill.
