An old king kneels and takes the Christ Child's foot in hands wrapped in cloth, and the Uffizi reads the veil as reverence: flesh covered before it touches what is holy. The Child is God and lets His foot be held. Above them a shelter of beams rests on ancient ruins, read as the pagan age giving way to the new. The Uffizi, following Vasari, names the kings as Medici, Cosimo the Elder at the feet, probably Piero in red and Giovanni in white, all three already dead. Gaspare del Lama founded this chapel of the Magi in 1469; Sandro Botticelli paints him grey-haired, in light blue, pointing at himself.
