About this painting
The three kings are Medici — the Uffizi, following Vasari: Cosimo the Elder at the Child's feet, probably his sons Piero in red and Giovanni in white. All three already dead.
The eldest kneels and wipes those feet, hands veiled in cloth — flesh covered before it touches what is holy. The shelter above rests on antique ruins: the pagan age ended, the new begun.
Gaspare del Lama, an ambitious agent of the money-changers' guild, founded this chapel of the Magi in 1469. He is the white-haired man in light blue, turned out of the scene, pointing at himself.
