About this painting
The Christ who judges the world was drawn from a pagan statue. The Met traces this figure to the Laocoon, the ancient marble of a man dying in the coils of sea-serpents, and the nudes below him to prints after Raphael: Antwerp built its Judgment out of Rome, arriving by paper. Heaven and earth are joined by nothing but two angels blowing trumpets. Christ blesses the saved at the lower left; at the right Michael drives the damned toward a hell burning in the distance.
