About this painting
Matthew seats the Judge, parts the sheep from the goats, and describes no ground. The ground here is an avenue of emptied tombs down the centre, drawn in strict perspective, the line between saved and damned made a road to a vanishing point.
To Christ's right the blessed take hands in a round dance out of David before the Ark; to his left, devils with tridents sort the damned by sin. Popes and kings stand in that crowd beside monks and commoners, judged with no rank spared.
Hell alone came from a poet: the three-headed devil below is Dante's.
