Christ sits on the cloud with His right hand raised, and everything below Him divides. The Alte Pinakothek says the blessed on the left are drawn up by angels to receive the crown of eternal life, while Michael drives the damned into Hell. Matthew has it: He "shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats." Our Lady stands near Him in blue, looking down; Joachim von Sandrart, in 1675, named the altarpiece first as her intercession with Christ and only secondarily as the Last Judgment. Wolfgang Wilhelm, Count Palatine of Neuburg, converted in 1613 and ordered it from Rubens for his court church; it went up over the high altar in January 1618. The nudities gave offence, the Bayerische Staatszeitung reports: it was partly curtained, then taken down in 1653. At the bottom, men are still pushing a gravestone off.
