About this painting
A Nativity is traditionally a joyful subject. The Messina museum calls it a manifesto of human fragility: the Madonna of Humility, the Virgin on the earth, receiving the shepherds.
It hung on a Capuchin high altar; poverty and humility are that order's rule. The shed resembles a paglialora, the Sicilian hut of poor materials. Her prone body forms the base of a right triangle, cut from the equilateral one that stood for divinity: the human, unbalanced, divided from the divine.
He had broken out of Malta's prison in October 1608. A death sentence for homicide stood over him.
