Saint Francis lies back in the grass with his eyes shut, and an angel holds him up. The weight is a man's; the arms are heaven's. At his side there is only a faint mark: no blood, no wounded hands. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, likens the embrace to angels upholding the dead Christ, a type it traces to Veronese; Caravaggio.org notes the angel has two wings, not the seraph's six. It was a private devotion for Ottavio Costa, banker to the papal court, and E. Peters Bowron calls it Caravaggio's first religious painting. In the dark behind them, a thin light is breaking.
