No lamp burns in the stable. The Child lies in the straw, Our Lady draws the cloth back from Him, and every face is lit from below, from Him. CODART, on the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum's 2017-18 exhibition, says the Christ Child is the sole light source; the art historian Carsten Schmalstieg counts only six figures, with an ox at the edge. The Uffizi notes that Italy knew Gerrit van Honthorst as Gherardo delle Notti, for his night scenes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art says the ox at the manger comes not from the Gospels but from Isaiah's prophecy. It leans in at Saint Joseph's shoulder.
