An old man's bare arm reaches the length of the table, pen in hand, and at the far end a skull sits on an open book. Saint Jerome does not look up. Bellori, in 1672, described him writing attentively and stretching out his hand. The Galleria Borghese reads Caravaggio's canvas as a dialogue of opposites: warm flesh and purple mantle against the cool book, the skull and the white cloth; life and death, past and present. Calvesi proposed the purple as a compliment to Cardinal Scipione Borghese; Marini judged it unfinished, and Cinotti disputed him. The book lies open between the living head and the dead one.
