A loaf lies on the cloth and a broken one on the dish, and Christ's right hand is raised above them in blessing. Two disciples lean in from the dark; the innkeeper stands, and an old woman brings a plate. The Pinacoteca di Brera sets this supper beside the earlier London version and finds greater intimacy, a plainer palette, and an almost theatrical light underscoring the sacred nature of the moment. Its room text has the figures welling up from a dark ground under a warm light from an unseen source. Caravaggio painted it, Brera says, probably at Paliano, after killing Ranuccio Tomassoni. The bread is still on the table.
