About this painting
Only bread and wine sit on the table, his hands caught mid-blessing over the loaf — the meal narrowed to the priest's gesture at the altar. The light on his face comes from no lamp, no window; it is the flash of recognition arriving early, the instant Luke 24:31 names: their eyes were opened, and they knew him.
A dog and two cats hide underfoot; Christ's pose and his companion's hat are lifted from Dürer's woodcut of the meal. Above his head, an eye in a triangle covers an earlier Trinity image the church came to forbid.
