Bread lies on the table and a hand is raised over it, and still the two disciples have not seen who sits with them. One watches the blessing; the other pours the wine. Heidi Hornik and Mikeal Parsons read Pontormo's choice as the moment before the revelation, which the Uffizi finds already in the beam of light on Christ's face. Behind Him the Carthusians of the Galluzzo charterhouse step out of the dark as witnesses, the prior Leonardo Buonafede at His right; the monks had it painted for their guest quarters. Christ looks out, past the loaf, at whoever comes in next to eat.
