Four women stand in a narrow street, and two of them hold each other. Our Lady, in blue, and Saint Elizabeth, in green and orange, meet in profile, arms and cloth wound together, bare feet on the stones; the two companions behind them face straight out and do not move. The Web Gallery of Art notes their difference in age and their likeness to the two saints, and reads them as doubles of Mary and Elizabeth, eyes fixed on something outside the scene. The Getty places the altarpiece in Florence's political upheaval at the end of the 1520s, and recent conservation has given back its range of colour. Pontormo lets each woman stand here twice: once turned to her kinswoman, once turned to you.
