Saint Peter is going up head down, and no one here hates him. Three men do the work: one hauls a rope, one heaves at the beam, one braces beneath it with his back to us and his soles black with dirt. The basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo reads the inverted cross as Peter's own choice, humility refusing to die as Christ died, and the three as labourers, not executioners. Heather Nolin finds strain and groaning in them, and, following Leo Steinberg, says Caravaggio's space comes right only from halfway into the chapel. Peter lifts his white head off the wood, his eyes wide open.
