An angel wakes Joseph in the night and the family leaves before dawn. Giotto's revolution in this chapel was not perspective alone but people — the holder's own account puts it on the representation of man in his physicality and his feeling — and the Flight is the quiet before the worst thing in the cycle. It is not opposite the Massacre of the Innocents. It is immediately beside it, on the same wall, in the same row.
