Christ rises above the mountain in white, arms open, and the three disciples on the summit throw themselves down, shielding their eyes. Matthew writes: "And he was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow." Below, in the dark, a father holds up a boy whose eyes roll back, and the disciples who could not cure him are pointing, one arm straight up toward the mountain. Andrea Lonardo, following Maurizio Calvesi, reads the lower scene as their failed attempt, and the strain between the two levels as the work's originality. The Vatican Pinacoteca records the commission from Cardinal Giulio de' Medici for Narbonne. Raphael died on 6 April 1520 with it unfinished, and Vasari says it was placed at his head. Pandolfo Pico wrote the next morning that the night had been Good Friday.
