A wicker basket of folded cloth stands in the corner, and the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten names the whole work for it: Die heilige Familie mit dem Korb. Our Lady sits in red and blue, one sandalled foot forward. The Christ Child on her lap reaches for the face of the young Baptist, who presses close, and a lamb noses in at the left. Saint Joseph leans on a stone pedestal, chin in hand, and watches. The museum traces the arrangement to the Holy Family beneath the Oak of Raphael and Giulio Romano, and the Child's pose to Raphael's Bridgewater Madonna. Luke gives Nazareth a line: "And He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was subject to them." No patron is recorded; Rubens's Holy Family has been at Sanssouci since 1764. The Maker of the world has laundry.
