The young Baptist holds out a globe, and the Child puts His hand to it; Saint Joseph steadies it from behind. The Met says the four figures' hands spiral around the orb, and that the gesture is the meaning. Andrea del Sarto painted it around 1528 for Giovanni Borgherini, when Florence had freed itself of the Medici and declared itself a republic. The Met reads it as much a political statement as a religious one: John, patron saint of Florence, passes the orb to Christ, naming Him, not the Medici, sole ruler of the city. Our Lady holds the Child. The Child holds the world.
