Abraham's hand rests on Isaac's head; the other holds the knife low. An angel looks up into the old man's face, and beside the angel waits a ram. Sotheby's catalogue reads the light as falling almost only on what saves: the angel's face, the ram, the pyre, Abraham's hands. Genesis 22:12 stops the hand laid on the son. Found again in 1987, the canvas carried Caravaggio's name for years on Mina Gregori's word; Bologna proposed Bartolomeo Cavarozzi in 1992, and Spear and Papi followed. Genesis put a ram in the son's place. The catalogue put a follower in the master's.
