About this painting

Christ goes up with His banner, one knee still bent, and leaves the tomb to the angel. The angel points skyward; Word on Fire's Ellyn von Huben has him gently holding back the slab while pointing to the miracle, sets his calm against the terrified amazement of the bystanders, and sees Christ use the tomb as a jumping-off point. The Art Institute of Chicago calls this the only documented painting by Francesco Boneri, Cecco del Caravaggio, perhaps the boy who assisted Caravaggio in his last Roman years; it exaggerates his master's bold contrast of light and dark. At the foot a lantern stands on the ground, no longer needed.
