Christ goes up barefoot out of the tomb with a white banner, into a sun full of small angels, and the soldiers below sleep or throw up a shield. An angel leans on the stone. The Cleveland Museum of Art points to vivid colors and explosive poses, meticulous brushwork and exquisite details, and to three holy women hastening across a luminous landscape toward Christ's vacant tomb. Heather Lemonedes, the museum's chief curator, calls it Johann König's largest and most ambitious painting on copper. Look through the arch for them, small on the far road. They are still running toward what has already happened.
