About this painting
Dolci gives the Virgin nothing to hold and nothing to look at. She folds her hands and the dark simply yields, a faint light gathering round a blue made of deep lapis lazuli and nothing cheaper. Tokyo traces the folded-hands type back to Titian's Madonnas. On the reverse of the panel is the prayer the picture is for — REGINA MARTIRUM ORA PRO NOBIS, Queen of Martyrs, pray for us. This is not a scene from the Passion. It is the mother afterwards, and the inscription tells you what to say to her.
