About this painting
Francis is traditionally shown receiving the stigmata. Here, a scroll instead, borrowed words: Come, my children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Psalm 33. Ringed by seraphim, lifted into glory, he teaches rather than suffers — and the children are kneeling below.
Louis IX in the fleur-de-lis of France, Elizabeth of Hungary in her apron of roses, and Lucchesio and Bona, a married couple who took Francis's Third Order rule from his hands in 1221 and kept their secular lives.
All four are tertiaries. Not one of them is a friar.
