A lamp hangs above Christ's head with two wicks burning, and the long room is dark around it. Poussin sets the Supper in a Roman triclinium, six disciples reclining on either side, and Christ at the centre holding the bread and the cup in one hand and raising the other in blessing. The National Gallery counts three flames, the double-wicked lamp and a candle on a stool, and thinks Judas is probably the figure second from the left, the only disciple who does not turn toward Him. At the far left a shadowy figure goes out through an open door. Cassiano dal Pozzo commissioned the canvas. The bread is in His hand, and the door stands open.
