He painted the second after the sentence. One of you will betray me — and the twelve break into four groups of three, recoiling, protesting, demanding to know. Philip's hands are at his own chest: surely not I?
Judas is not where tradition put him. Every earlier painter set him alone on the near side of the table; Leonardo puts him among the others, in shadow, gripping the bag the museum calls thirty pieces of silver: the answer, bought.
Every line of the room converges on Christ's right temple. The perspective is built so the eye cannot go anywhere else.
