About this painting

Leonardo's Gabriel kneels in a walled garden, a lily in his hand, and his shadow falls on the grass like any man's. Our Lady lifts one hand; the other rests on the book she was reading. The Uffizi reads the lily as her emblem of purity and the closed garden as alluding to it. Her right arm reaches unusually far to that book, which the gallery reads as calibration, not error: the work hung low over a side altar, its perspective possibly built to resolve from the right. No patron or commission survives, only its arrival from San Bartolomeo a Monteoliveto. Gabriel's hand stays raised; the book stays open.
