Gabriel kneels in a garden with his hand lifted, and across a low stand Our Lady kneels on a red floor with her arms crossed on her breast. "And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." She bows her head, and the Word is about to be made flesh in a room with benches. The Louvre gives the work to Lorenzo di Credi and argues it from the eyes: large, a little out of proportion, the expressions less subtle, the drapery less sculptural. Morelli and Berenson had preferred Leonardo. It belonged to the predella of the altarpiece commissioned from Verrocchio around 1475 for the Madonna di Piazza oratory in Pistoia Cathedral, work the museum says was largely delegated to Lorenzo. The eyes carry the argument, and hers are lowered.
