Gabriel comes in barefoot with a lily, and Our Lady keeps one hand on her open book. Above her, along the canopy of the bed, a Hebrew line quotes Isaiah: a virgin shall conceive and bear a son. Cavallini to Veronese notes that Cima wrote the prophecy into the room where it comes true. The Web Gallery of Art reads the light as the light that travels with Gabriel, not daylight, and his coming as a rush of air that stirs robe, hair and parchment. That parchment on the step names five silk weavers who commissioned it, and the date, 1495. An empty chair waits by the wall.
