Three red carnations stand in a glass on the floor, and heaven comes down to meet them. The Child is already on His way from the Father, the Cross on His shoulder; the Holy Spirit, as a dove, hangs in His burst of light; Our Lady, one hand on her breast, keeps her place in the book. The Musei Capitolini name what He brings, the column and the Cross with the nails and the crown of thorns, and read her book, after Saint Bernard, as Isaiah's prophecy. The room stays ordinary: a fire, a kitten. The carnations, garofani, are Garofalo's signature, the museum notes, set low where a kneeling reader finds them.
