A peacock spreads its tail at the top of the border, directly above the Annunciation, and the Cleveland Museum of Art notes that medieval Christian art often used the peacock for resurrection and eternal life. Below it Gabriel kneels with a flowering branch in his hand, and Our Lady, standing, lifts one hand to his greeting: "Hail, full of grace." Lower down, in a gold-edged medallion, the Christ Child lies on the ground before His Mother, and two prophets look on from roundels at either side. The leaf is attributed to the Master of Riccardiana 231, working in Florence about 1485, crowding its margins with putti, gold and flaming vases. A book of hours held the prayers said through the day, Cleveland explains, and one this luxurious could only have belonged to an aristocratic household. The bird keeps its watch above the angel.
