A house flies. Angels carry it through open sky on their backs and arms, and Our Lady sits on its roof with the Christ Child, riding it like a figurehead on a ship. At Loreto the house is venerated, by tradition, as the Holy Family's actual home, carried there out of the Holy Land. Trumpets sound at the right; below, dark figures tumble away into shadow. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo painted this oil sketch in 1743, and Gino Fogolari records the commission that year from the Discalced Carmelites of the Scalzi church in Venice, with Mengozzi Colonna for the painted architecture. The ceiling itself is gone: an Austrian bomb destroyed it in 1915, the Gallerie dell'Accademia records. Only the sketch keeps the flight, and in it the house is still in the air.
