About this painting
The Virgin stands on the roof of a flying house, the Christ Child in her arms, poised like a ship's figurehead guiding it through the sky. Angels carry the house beneath her, venerated as the Holy Family's actual home, borne out of a Holy Land grown unsafe. Below them, dark figures fall as light widens above.
Tiepolo painted this modello in 1743, planning his ceiling for Venice's Scalzi church, using the di sotto in su device so the congregation looked straight up into the miracle. Austrian bombing destroyed that ceiling in 1915.
