A candle for the dying is the whole event. Our Lady lies still in blue, her hands folded, and the apostles crowd the bed with their faces and their hands. The Groeningemuseum records Peter, as priest, taking the candle from Thomas and setting it between her hands, while Christ in an aureole of angels comes to receive her soul. No Gospel tells this; the museum names Hugo van der Goes's sources as the apocrypha and the Legenda Aurea, where the apostles are gathered to her deathbed by miracle. Bare feet on the boards, a closed book under one hand. Above, her Son opens His arms.
