Two men at the very edges pull back a green curtain, and there is the Child, small on a white cloth in a wooden manger. The Gemäldegalerie says these two half-figures, far larger than anyone at the adoration, have been recognized as prophets who opened the veil over the Nativity and stepped aside, heralds showing the beholder what it means. Shepherds come running in from the left, one with his mouth half open; angels gather round the Virgin and the Child. Hugo van der Goes lays a sheaf of grain before the manger, and the museum reads it as the bread come down from heaven. The curtain stays open.
And they came with haste: and they found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.
