There is no lamp. The light comes off the Child's body, and Our Lady bends into it with her arms around Him. A woman lifts her hand against the glare; angels tumble in a cloud overhead. Estelle Hurll read Christ here as the light of the world, and the Dresden gallery's record names the Child as the only source of light. Correggio painted it for Alberto Pratoneri's family chapel in Reggio Emilia, contracted 10 October 1522. In May 1640 the Duke of Modena carried it off, leaving a painted copy in its place; the old accounts call it stolen. The night is still lit from the manger.
