About this painting
The light comes from the child. No lamp, no halo disc: Correggio paints radiance pouring off the infant's body, for Christ is "the light of the world." Mary encircles him completely with her arms, her bent elbow a pillow for his head, watching him, one foot left free of its swaddling band.
Alberto Pratoneri commissioned it for his family chapel in Reggio Emilia, contracted 10 October 1522. In May 1640 the Duke of Modena carried it off, leaving a painted copy in its place; the old accounts record it simply as stolen from the church.
