About this painting

Saint Francis holds out his open hands, and between them the crucifix bleeds. The Gallerie dell'Accademia reads the body not as painted wood but as true flesh, blood running from the hands, the feet and the thorn-crowned head, and sees on Francis's own hands the stigmata that make him alter Christus. Above the cross the rose branches carry no flowers, few leaves and many thorns: the museum takes them for Christ's crown and for the legend of the saint's penance among thorns. A skull and books sit on the rock. The museum records no altar for Annibale Carracci's work. The hands are held out to whoever stands there.
