The whip lies on the floor beside a bundle of thorny twigs, and Christ goes down on hands and knees to reach His black robe. His back is cut. The Gospels go straight from the scourging to the crown of thorns; none has Him alone afterward, gathering His clothes. The moment belongs to meditation: in the Catholic Reformation, the National Gallery in London notes, worshippers were encouraged to imagine themselves present at the Passion. Juan Correa, who called himself free mulatto and master painter, made it in Mexico City. Five angels, the National Gallery of Art says, weep openly. There is room on the floor for one more.
