About this painting
Lazarus is already standing. Gozzoli skips the sealed stone and the four days' stench and paints the half-second after the command: two men unwinding the graveclothes while Christ, a gold book in his hand, still holds one arm raised. Ten haloed men crowd behind him; behind them a white Tuscan city with red roofs and palm trees, as if Bethany stood in the Arno valley. The Gallery files it under the Life of Christ. Who painted it is disputed — since 1980 its own bibliography keeps saying Benozzo and his son Alesso.
When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.
