Christ raises His arm in a doorway, and the steps fill with the fallen. The Statens Museum for Kunst describes the temple as a gloomy grotto amid the city, with the scourging of those who desecrated it at the centre. Around Him the trade goes on: a quack works his audience, a thief reaches for an onlooker's purse, and a condemned man hangs in a basket over water, free only if he cuts the rope and falls. The crescent moon on the dome, the museum says, stands for paganism and sin. An unknown follower of Hieronymus Bosch painted it after 1569. Far back, almost illegible, the Passion has begun.
