Our Lady holds a small rose between two fingers, and the Child reaches across her lap to take it. The Frick reads the rose as a symbol of His future suffering, echoed in the carved rosettes beneath the throne. Four angels stand about the throne, the one in white barefoot with arms folded; the Clark finds his shadow on the throne's base and reads it as a sign the work first hung to the right of a window. When Piero della Francesca's altarpiece was shown at the Metropolitan Museum, Walter Kaiser reports, six scholars could not agree on a date. It keeps its wall and gives up no year.
