About this painting
An angel in white throws a shadow across the throne's base, the only record this panel keeps of the wall it was made for. The Clark reads it as evidence the picture hung right of a window.
The Christ Child reaches for a rose, which the Frick reads as his future suffering, carved again in the rosettes below the throne. Walter Kaiser found the light coming from the left across those stone roses.
Six scholars in the Metropolitan's catalogue could not agree on a date. It names its wall and refuses its year.
