Dots per inch: how many pixels of the museum’s file go into each inch of paper. Our floor is 240 for sheets up to 20 inches, 180 up to 36 inches and 120 beyond, because a larger print is seen from further away. We never offer a sheet below the floor, and the number on each size is the one you receive.

The field is red because it is not a field. Behind the women, across a slanting apple bough, Jacob wrestles with the angel on ground the colour of fire, the angel's wings a hard chrome yellow, and a cow wanders past as if nothing were happening. In front, the women of Pont-Aven in their white coifs have bowed their heads; the nearest has joined her hands and shut her eyes, and at the right edge a tonsured head leans in among them. Paul Gauguin painted it in Brittany in 1888, and the National Galleries of Scotland, which bought it in 1925, record that the women have just heard a sermon on Jacob and the angel, and that the flat shapes and bold colour were his break with Impressionism. Jacob wrestled till the morning and would not let go without a blessing. The women have brought the fight home from church, behind their closed eyes.
