Christ stands bound to a marble column, His head bowed, His body covered with small red wounds, His gold halo bright against the stone. Two men work at Him from below; two more talk it over on a balcony, one leaning on a staff. The Belvedere records that this was once one face of a painted altarpiece wing more than twice this size, with the Betrothal of the Virgin on the other; at an unknown date the wing was cut down and its front separated from its back. Both boards are Swiss stone pine. It was Michael Pacher's last commission, a Marian altarpiece for the parish church of Salzburg, now the Franciscan Church, whose shrine alone stood almost six metres high. On one side of the wood Christ was scourged; on the other, His Mother was married.
