A white cloth hangs over the side of an empty stone coffin, and putti drop white flowers into it. Above, Our Lady rises between fluted columns, borne up by putti, her face lifted and one hand held out open. The Web Gallery of Art finds two things unusual: the Virgin shown in profile, and no apostles gathered at the tomb. In the Golden Legend they open the sepulchre and find not the body, only the vestments and the sudary. Poussin keeps the cloth and leaves the men out. After long debate, the painting is now generally agreed to be his own, from the first years of the 1630s. Nobody is left at the tomb but the putti, and you.
