Saint John stands on the higher bank and reaches down with a shell of water; Christ stands below him in the stream, head bowed, one hand trailing toward the current. The Holy Spirit comes as a Dove in a burst of light, small cherubs round Him. Save Venice, whose project restored the canvas in 2004, reads the raised Baptist as Jacopo Tintoretto quite appropriately humbling Christ, and the pouring gesture as both elegant and natural. The light argues the other way: Christ's body is lit, John's stays mostly in shadow. The patrons were the bargemen's guild, and the landscape behind, Save Venice notes, recalls the Venetian lagoon they knew. Matthew records John's protest at exactly this reversal. The Baptist pours anyway, from above, in the dark.
But John stayed him, saying: I ought to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me?
